316L Stainless Housing for a Diagnostic Instrument

A sealed, electro-polished 316L housing machined to medical-grade surface and cleanliness requirements, delivered with full material traceability.

The challenge

A medical OEM needed a fluid-tight housing for a benchtop diagnostic instrument. Requirements were demanding: 316L for biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, a mirror-smooth Ra 0.4 µm finish on the O-ring sealing faces, and full material traceability with a certificate of conformance for every batch.

What we did

  • Material traceability. We sourced certified 316L with mill test reports and tracked the heat number from raw bar through to the finished part.
  • Sealing-face strategy. The O-ring grooves and mating faces were finished with a dedicated low-feed pass, then electro-polished to reach Ra 0.4 µm and remove free iron from the surface.
  • Cleanliness control. Parts were deburred, passivated, and cleaned in a controlled environment, then individually bagged.
  • Documentation. Each shipment included a dimensional report, material certificate, and finish verification.

The result

The first batch passed the customer’s incoming inspection at 100%. The sealing faces consistently measured between Ra 0.31 and 0.38 µm, comfortably inside the 0.4 µm requirement. Because the traceability paperwork was complete on day one, the customer cleared the parts for their own validation without back-and-forth.

We’re now the customer’s primary supplier for this housing and two related components.
